Panther Prowl & OPEN HOUSE

It is not necessary for students who attend all classes in A.L.E. to attend Panther Prowl, but if your students take a variety of classes around campus, you will want to attend in order to get important campus information.

Emails will be sent to parents toward the end of the summer providing date and time information for Panther Prowl.

Whether or not you choose to go to Panther Prowl or simply go to the A.L.E. Open House, I ask that on this day, you assist your student in obtaining a Lopez ID card.  I encourage you to also purchase a Lopez t-shirt to be left in the A.L.E. room.  We participate in Special Olympics Bowling in the fall, track and field in the spring, and other field trips.  It's important for all of our students to be easily identified as proud Lopez Middle School students.

P.E. Uniforms

If your student is in Adaptive P.E., he or she will not need to purchase a uniform.  If your student participates in general P.E., a uniform is required and can be purchased on the day of Panther Prowl.

Classroom phone

There is a telephone in the A.L.E. classroom, but I ask that you please be aware that when it is not my conference period (1:45-2:35), I am actively teaching students.  The best mode of communication during instructional periods is through email.  If it is necessary to call the classroom phone during instructional periods, please keep conversations brief so that the flow of a lesson is not too heavily interrupted.  Thank you.

restroom

There is one private restroom off a corridor between the two A.L.E. classrooms.  Your students will always have privacy to handle their restroom needs alone or with a paraprofessional or teacher if needed.  Students who are closer to complete independence with personal care needs and behavior are encouraged to use the restroom in the main hall despite access to the closer restroom.

ID CARDS

I want to reiterate the importance of getting your student an ID card on the day of Panther Prowl/Open House.  Pictures for new students are sometimes taken in elementary school, but please verify that your student has a valid ID card before you leave Panther Prowl.

Lunch

We go to lunch slightly early so that our students can make proper lunch selections with guidance from a paraprofessional or teacher.  We also work on skills such as selecting appropriate utensils & condiments, as well as how to swipe your card to pay for your lunch independently.  Students are usually seated just as the rest of the Lopez students are coming in for lunch, and they are supervised by paraprofessionals in the cafeteria throughout the duration of lunch.

If your student will be purchasing a lunch at school, he or she will use their ID cards to make the transaction. You can add money to their accounts online.  Students will only be allowed the normal lunch option unless you express, when you set up their account, that they are allowed extras.  For more lunch information, click below.

*Student allergies are always taken into account, and specific accommodations are made to ensure student safety at all times.

the bus & Parent Drop-off/pick-up

If your student rides the special needs bus, arrangements should have been made the year prior by your teacher or campus coordinator.  If you would like information on what bus your student will ride or pick-up times, please visit the link below and contact the transportation department.  They usually send a letter to parents before school starts notifying bus numbers and times.

If you plan on dropping off &/or picking up your student from the A.L.E. classroom for rather than riding the bus, please enter the campus grounds from the Eagle Vail entrance and take an immediate left.  Park in one of the places near the chain link fence.  A para or teacher will receive your student at your car in the morning and walk your student to your car in the afternoon.  We will provide you with an EXEMPT parking sign for your dashboard.

PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE IN THE AREA OR PARK IN THE AREA WHERE THE BUSES DROP OFF AND PICK UP.  YOUR AUTOMOBILE IN THIS AREA LIMITS VISIBILITY FOR THE BUS DRIVERS, AND WE ALSO DO NOT WANT STUDENTS CROSSING IN ANY AREA WHERE THERE ARE SCHOOL BUSES.

Drop Off:  8:10 a.m. (Please, no earlier than 8:00.)
*If you arrive later than 8:10, please take your student to the front entrance of the school to be dropped off.

Pick Up:  3:15 p.m. (Please, no later than 3:30.)

Parents, please be respectful of these arrival and dismissal times.  It is extremely important to us to maintain safe supervision at all times.  There are duties and meetings frequently scheduled before and after school, so arrivals that are too early or pick-ups that are too late pull staff members from other scheduled areas of importance.  *Lopez staff that is not assigned to ALE should not be receiving or dismissing your students.

Headphones, laminate & magazines

Picture
At any given time we may have one or two small groups learning with a teacher at the same time students are learning on technology. Sounds from the computers can be distracting for the small groups, and small group sounds can be distracting for the students on computers. We do not have a class set of headphones, so I ask that you please provide a set for your student. Each set is placed in a bag with the student's name, and they will only be used by your student. It is also best to supply headphones that go over the head rather than earbuds, as earbuds tend to break easier and fall out of the students' ears.

Most of the activities that we use to teach every day are created individually for your student by their teachers. In order for these activities to survive the amount of time it takes your student to master their goal, we laminate activities. Hard laminate is not provided by the district. Unfortunately, this is one of those items that comes out of the teachers' pockets throughout the year. If you could supply a box of laminate at the beginning of the year, it would be greatly appreciated. The brand does not matter. I found a good price on Amazon and linked the picture above, just in case you had trouble locating it.

Pictures are an essential component of most every activity because we have such visual learners. Students might match, sort or identify using pictures. Magazines are particularly useful in Science and Social Studies when we study cultures, landforms and heredity. It really doesn't matter which magazine, because they're all useful. We don't need you to purchase new magazines, because they're going to get cut up. If you have old magazines at home, we'd appreciate it if you sent them to school in your student's backpack rather than disposing of them. Thank you!
